Prey didn’t see the sniper before the bullet screamed past his head and hit a human behind him. He didn’t know where it had come from, but Distant Rain must have seen, or else the soldiers themselves knew. At Rain’s prompting, they fired a hail of bullets toward the top of a nearby building where a man had been crouching. The man tumbled over the edge and landed on the ground below.

At that, more rooftop soldiers began firing, and some of their bodyguards started to fall. Their peaceful escape turned into a bloody war. When the thundering reports finally fell silent, humans lay dead on every side. Blood soaked the ground.

Prey looked around in dismay. Some of these people had been cruel to Rain, he knew, but most were just guarding a building they’d been commanded to guard. Some of them probably hadn’t even known he and Rain were there. He looked at the one nearest, his eyes open but unseeing. Prey could smell the fish he’d eaten that morning, and the scent of another human who had held him close not long before.

Get up, Distant Rain said, and Prey obeyed immediately, though whether out of habit or because of the authority her smell communicated, he couldn’t say. We should go before more of them come.

This is awful, Prey sent back, indicating the dead humans around him.

We were lucky, she replied. Nobody was hurt.

She meant the two of them, Prey realized. The humans didn’t count to her.

The female human who had rescued them crouched next to them, her eyes wide and her body shaking. She breathed in heaving gasps.

Then she stood unsteadily and pointed away from the setting sun. “This way.”
